Accident Description
The airplane sustained substantial damage during a landing on runway 22. According to the pilot, the aircraft tracked straight for a few seconds before beginning to veer to the left. The pilot applied right rudder with no effect, then added right brake, but the left turn continued. Nothing seemed to alter the airplane's direction.
The airplane departed the runway surface and struck the sod, causing the right landing gear to fail. The airplane came to rest approximately 11 feet from the edge of the runway, on a heading of 060 degrees.
Examination Findings
A post-accident examination of the airplane revealed no flight control anomalies. However, a metallurgical examination of the right rudder control cable determined that it had failed in overload.
