Accident Overview
A private pilot, who had recently received certification, was flying with one passenger when the accident occurred. The pilot entered a small valley, expecting it to lead into a larger valley. However, as the valley progressed, the terrain began to rise, prompting the pilot to initiate a full-power climb.
Sequence of Events
The valley became increasingly narrow, making a turn impossible. The terrain continued to rise, and the airplane's airspeed decreased. The pilot executed a forced landing uphill on rough, uneven terrain. After landing, the pilot and passenger were able to turn the airplane around so that it faced downhill, preparing for a takeoff attempt.
During the downhill takeoff run, the main wheels struck a series of large bumps. The pilot reported that upon hitting the bumps, just before takeoff, he accidentally closed the throttle at the moment the airplane fell over a cliff approximately fifty feet high. The airplane continued to fall, colliding with the valley floor. The aircraft sustained substantial damage.
