Accident Overview
An airplane experienced a loss of engine power during a touch and go landing and subsequently conducted a forced landing, resulting in substantial damage. The aircraft had departed from runway 33 after performing a touch and go when the engine power loss occurred at an altitude between 100 and 150 feet above ground level.
Pilot Report
The instructor pilot reported detecting a deceleration and a reduction in engine noise at approximately 100-150 feet. A quick mental checklist was performed, including checking the throttle and applying carburetor heat, but no improvement in engine performance was observed. Recognizing a complete engine failure and loss of altitude, the instructor immediately took control of the aircraft. The nose was lowered to maintain airspeed and prevent a stall, and a turn was initiated to land on runway 09, which was considered the only safe area due to trees and parked aircraft ahead.
Landing and Impact
The turn was completed over the runway, with rapid altitude loss. Touchdown occurred at a high rate of descent with the left wing slightly up. The pilot was unsure of the exact touchdown point but observed that the landing gear had collapsed and the aircraft was skidding to a stop. The airplane impacted the ground on the right side of runway 09.
Post-Accident Inspection
An inspection of the airplane revealed no anomalies to the fuel system or engine. The aircraft sustained substantial damage during the forced landing.
