Accident Summary
A private pilot receiving instruction experienced a brake failure after landing. When the pilot applied the brakes, only the right brake operated; the left brake pedal went to the floor with no braking action. The instructor pilot then took control and began pumping the brakes in an attempt to restore system pressure.
Sequence of Events
The airplane departed the side of the runway but the instructor was able to return it to the runway surface. However, the aircraft again went off the side of the runway, sliding on gravel. During the slide, the airplane struck a rock and nosed over.
Post-Accident Examination
Post-accident examination revealed that the right brake assembly was damaged, which precluded a definitive assessment of its condition. No other mechanical anomalies were reported.
