Flight Details
The flight departed and proceeded to another airport, where the pilot performed a full stop landing. After deciding to remain in the traffic pattern, the pilot executed a series of touch-and-go landings. The aircraft departed, flew one traffic pattern, landed, and then departed again.
Incident Sequence
During the initial takeoff climb following the second landing, the engine began to surge and lose power. The pilot subsequently performed a forced landing to an open field. During the forced landing, the airplane contacted fence posts, resulting in the separation of both wings. The aircraft then came to rest in an upright position.
Post-Accident Examination
A review of the airplane's maintenance records revealed no open maintenance discrepancies. An examination of the engine, including a successful full engine test run, did not reveal the reason for the loss of engine power. No further causal factors were identified.
