Pilot Account

The pilot reported that he was providing helicopter rides to friends. On his third trip, he taxied to a grass tie-down area where he had landed during previous flights. While hovering at an altitude of approximately 3 feet, the helicopter began to exhibit a translating tendency to the right. The pilot attempted to correct the movement, but the helicopter turned 180 degrees, causing the tail rotor to contact the ground. Subsequently, the right skid dug into the terrain, and the helicopter entered a dynamic rollover onto its right side.

Witness Account

A witness observed the helicopter approaching for a landing. According to the witness, the helicopter over-flared, leading to the tail and tail rotor striking the ground.
