Accident Overview
The airplane descended uncontrollably and impacted the ocean after experiencing a loss of control while maneuvering. The event occurred during a training flight involving a certified flight instructor (CFI) and a pilot under instruction (PUI).
Sequence of Events
The CFI first demonstrated a 4-point roll maneuver. He then transferred control of the airplane to the PUI so that the student could demonstrate the same maneuver. Shortly after the transfer, the airplane's nose pitched down by an estimated 20 to 30 degrees. The PUI asked the CFI if he was causing the nose to pitch down; the CFI responded that he was not. The CFI then attempted to correct the nose-down pitch, but the control stick had no effect and the elevator trim would not move. Both the CFI and the PUI bailed out of the airplane before it struck the ocean.
Investigation Findings
The airplane was not recovered after the accident. Consequently, investigators were unable to determine the reason for the loss of control. No mechanical or structural anomalies could be confirmed due to the lack of wreckage.
