Pilot Report

The pilot reported performing an engine run-up and using a checklist prior to takeoff. The elevator trim was set to the takeoff position, flight control continuity was checked, flaps were retracted, and the engine run-up was normal. After lining up on the runway, full power was applied and the aircraft was rotated at 65 knots. As the airplane began to climb, the pilot attempted to maintain 65 knots. When the airplane reached an altitude of approximately 40-50 feet above ground level, the left wing dropped and the stall horn activated. The stall horn remained on as the airplane turned left and collided with trees.

Aircraft Performance

Examination of the Gulfstream American AA-5B Tiger Pilot Operating Handbook (POH) indicated that for a normal takeoff, the pilot should accelerate to 50 knots indicated airspeed (KIAS) before applying light back pressure to lift off the nose wheel, then accelerate to the desired climb speed once airborne. According to the POH, the best angle of climb speed was 70 knots and normal climb out speed was 90 knots.
