Landing and Brake Failure
During a landing at normal speed, the pilot applied the brakes and found that the brake pedals traveled to their full extent without resistance. The pilot immediately responded by pulling the fuel shutoff, feathering the propellers, and cutting all switches while maintaining directional control with the rudder.
Attempt to Slow Down
Realizing that the aircraft was not decelerating sufficiently, the pilot decided to steer the airplane onto the grass in an effort to reduce speed. Despite this action, the airplane continued to roll toward the airport perimeter fence.
Collision with Fence
The airplane struck the perimeter fence at an estimated speed of 20 to 25 miles per hour. After impact, the aircraft came to a stop in a ditch located just beyond the fence.
Post-Incident Examination
Inspection of the hydraulic system revealed that a hydraulic line had failed. The failed line was determined to be the cause of the brake pedal travel and subsequent loss of brake effectiveness.
