Incident Overview
A pilot experienced an abnormal stall warning activation during a climb, with the warning engaging 15 knots higher than its designed threshold. The pilot contacted Air Route Traffic Control Center (ARTCC) to report wind shear, but controllers stated that no wind shear had been reported in the area and instructed the pilot to maintain 13,000 feet. The pilot was unable to hold that altitude and descended to 12,000 feet, then to the minimum en route altitude of 11,000 feet. After failing to maintain 11,000 feet, the pilot descended to 10,500 feet, cancelled the IFR flight plan, and continued descending to 9,500 feet, at which point radio communications with ARTCC were lost.
Flight Control Challenges
During the descent, the airplane exhibited yawing, with the turn coordinator's ball positioned to the right side. The pilot applied full right aileron deflection to prevent the airplane from turning. The pilot proceeded to attempt a precautionary landing at an airport. A left crosswind assisted in keeping the airplane on track, but the pilot reported being unable to use the rudder to straighten the airplane for landing.
Landing Attempt and Outcome
At approximately 100 feet above ground level, the pilot initiated a go-around. With the flaps retracted, landing gear extended, and full power applied, the airplane failed to climb and instead descended slowly. Subsequently, the pilot executed a forced landing in an open field located one mile south of the airport. The landing resulted in damage to both wings, wrinkling of the aft fuselage, and separation of the main landing gear.
Post-Accident Findings
An inspection of the aircraft after the accident revealed no anomalies with the flight control system or the engine. Flight control continuity was confirmed.
