Cancellation of IFR and Landing Attempt
The pilot canceled his IFR clearance near the intended destination and maneuvered the airplane for landing. The airplane touched down approximately 2,050 feet down the 4,102-foot long runway, then bounced back into the air.
Aborted Landing and Configuration Changes
After the bounce, the pilot aborted the landing, retracted the landing gear, and reduced the flaps to about 10 degrees before reaching 50 feet above ground level (AGL). The airplane subsequently began to lose altitude and impacted trees.
Post-Accident Examination
Examination of the wreckage revealed no preimpact failures or malfunctions, and the pilot reported none.
Published Guidance on Flap Retraction
The Airplane Flying Handbook notes that retracting the flaps during a go-around can decrease lift and cause the airplane to sink rapidly. The Pilot's Operating Handbook (POH) specifies that flaps should be immediately reduced to 20 degrees, then retracted slowly after reaching a safe altitude.
