Flight and Weather Conditions

The pilot was conducting a visual cruise flight over mountainous terrain at an altitude of 6,500 feet. During the flight, the pilot observed clouds building at 5,000 feet and decided to return to the departure airport. To do so, the pilot descended through a gap in the clouds that was estimated to be between half a mile and one mile wide.
