Accident Overview
During the landing phase, the pilot reported encountering an unexpected crosswind. The airplane subsequently drifted off the runway and impacted the terrain. The impact substantially damaged the propeller, the right main landing gear was broken off, and the outboard portions of both wings were broken.
Aircraft Examination
An examination of the airplane following the accident revealed no anomalies. The aircraft appeared to have been functioning normally prior to the event.

At the time of the accident, the reported wind at Alamosa, Colorado, located 56 miles from the accident site at a bearing of 104 degrees, was from 040 degrees at 6 knots.
Pilot Information
Federal Aviation Administration records indicated that the pilot obtained a private pilot certificate on September 14, 2002. At the time of the accident, the pilot reported a total of 87 flight hours, with 32 hours in the accident airplane make and model, 7 of which were as pilot-in-command.
