Accident Sequence
Witnesses reported observing a glider heading south at an altitude of approximately 8 to 10 feet above the runway surface. The aircraft was traveling at a fast rate of speed with its spoilers not deployed and was intending to land. The glider was seen to flare several feet above the runway, then pull up at a high angle of attack while maintaining a high rate of speed.
Subsequently, the glider began a series of oscillations described as a "wheelbarrow" effect, involving multiple pull-ups and descents. During this sequence, the nose of the glider dropped to an angle of about 30 degrees, and the aircraft impacted the runway surface with significant force before coming to rest.
Post-Accident Examination
An examination of the dive brakes conducted after the accident did not reveal any discrepancies or malfunctions. The pilot was provided with an NTSB Pilot/Operator Accident Report Form 6120.1/2 by an FAA inspector; however, a completed form was not received by the NTSB.
