What happened
During a work-related photography flight lasting approximately 1.5 hours, the pilot of a Cessna experienced a total loss of all engine power. Prior to the flight, the pilot had not visually confirmed the fuel quantity in the tanks, though he believed approximately 45 gallons were available for use. While maneuvering, the engine lost power, prompting the pilot to switch the fuel selector from the right tank to the left tank; however, this action did not restore power. The pilot subsequently performed a hard forced landing in a soft open field. The pilot was not injured.
The investigation
An examination of the aircraft revealed that the right fuel tank was dry, while the left tank contained 4 gallons of fuel. Investigators found fuel drops in the metered fuel line between the metering unit and the manifold valve, as well as in the return line at the engine-driven fuel pump. The main fuel line leading to the engine-driven fuel pump was dry. Additionally, some fuel was present in the return line from the metering unit to the engine-driven fuel pump, and the gascolator contained approximately 1/4 of a gallon of fuel. About 1.5 ounces of fuel could be drained from the left header tank. The aircraft's electric boost pump was tested and found to be operational. A mechanical inspection of the engine, including manual rotation of the crankshaft, showed no evidence of internal mechanical malfunction prior to impact.
Findings
