A non-instrument rated pilot experienced an in-flight breakup while attempting to maintain visual flight rules within instrument meteorological conditions.

What happened

A pilot was conducting a VFR flight that transitioned into instrument meteorological conditions. Although the pilot did not obtain a preflight weather briefing, he received three in-flight weather briefings from the Miami Automated Flight Service Station. One of these briefings included information regarding a front located along the intended route.

Approximately 32 minutes prior to the accident, the pilot, who was not instrument rated, notified air traffic control that he was flying within clouds and attempting to maintain VFR. The controller offered an IFR clearance and provided assistance to avoid cloud layers; however, the pilot's requests for help were met with information regarding the limitations of radar depiction.

One minute before the accident, the controller alerted the pilot to a heavy weather echo located 2.5 miles ahead at the twelve o'clock position. The pilot stated he needed assistance. The controller provided a heading, but the pilot did not acknowledge the instruction. A subsequent instruction to level the wings and avoid a tight turn was also unacknowledged. Radar data indicated the aircraft descended from 12,600 feet to 8,800 feet MSL before entering an area of weather echoes. The aircraft then entered a left descending turn with a descent rate exceeding 5,000 feet per minute.

The investigation

Post-accident examination of the aircraft showed no evidence of mechanical malfunction. An investigation of the pilot's logbook revealed that he had logged 15 hours of actual instrument flight time as pilot-in-command across 34 flights, but these entries lacked signatures from a certified flight instructor or safety pilot. Additionally, the logs showed the pilot recorded instrument flight time prior to receiving his private pilot certificate. At the time of the accident, the pilot's medical certificate had expired.
