Incident Overview
While en route, the pilot decided to make an off-airport landing in an open field. During a shallow approach, the helicopter experienced a momentary loss of power. The pilot heard a burble noise from the engine, accompanied by a low rotor rpm warning and the helicopter settling toward the terrain. The pilot then attempted to increase power, but the rotor rpm did not fully recover.
Subsequent Maneuvers
The pilot was able to hover-taxi approximately five feet above the ground for about 50 yards. However, when the helicopter began to yaw, the pilot decided to attempt a landing. During the landing attempt, the helicopter was moving slightly sideways, and the left skid became stuck on a large clump of dirt, causing the aircraft to roll over onto its side.
Investigation Findings
An investigation determined that approximately 25 gallons of fuel were onboard at the time of the accident. Inspection of the engine and airframe revealed no anomalies that would have contributed to a loss of power.
