An aircraft on an ILS approach in instrument conditions lost radar contact after a rapid descent and impacted ground left of the final approach course. No preimpact failures were found; damage consistent with a spin.

Sequence of Events

The aircraft completed two holding circuits before being vectored onto the Instrument Landing System (ILS) Runway 1 approach in instrument meteorological conditions. It intercepted the final approach course approximately 4.0 miles outside the Locator Outer Marker (LOM) and tracked the localizer inbound while maintaining a constant altitude of 2,000 feet mean sea level (msl).

About 2.0 miles from the LOM, approach control issued an approach clearance and instructed the pilot to contact the tower. The pilot acknowledged both transmissions, adding "appreciate all your help," which was the last communication received from the accident aircraft.

As the aircraft neared the LOM, it began a gradual descent to 1,500 feet msl and slowed to a ground speed of approximately 70 knots. This condition persisted for about 20 seconds before the aircraft entered a rapid descent, and radar contact was subsequently lost.

The aircraft impacted the ground approximately 475 feet left of the final approach course and abeam the LOM. Damage to the aircraft was consistent with a spin to the right.

Examination Findings

Examination of the wreckage revealed no preimpact failures or malfunctions.
