An aircraft was substantially damaged after overrunning the runway following landing on a wet surface. The pilot reported hydroplaning and a tailwind at touchdown. The aircraft slid down a 75-foot embankment.

Accident Sequence

The pilot executed an instrument approach to the destination airport. Upon arrival, the pilot noted that it had been raining and the runway was wet. The wind conditions were reported as gusty, and the prevailing wind direction reversed to a tailwind as the aircraft touched down. The pilot applied maximum braking, but the aircraft began to hydroplane. The aircraft came to rest off the end of the runway. Approximately 15 feet from the end of the pavement, there was an embankment with a drop-off of about 75 feet at a slope of approximately 45 degrees downhill. No skid marks were observed in the area of the departure end of the runway.
