Accident Summary
The pilot had completed one agricultural application flight and returned for a second. Prior to the second takeoff, he loaded 90 gallons of fuel and about 5,000 pounds of fertilizer.
Takeoff Sequence
The takeoff was performed on a grass strip. The pilot reported that the airplane developed normal power during the takeoff roll. However, upon reaching the midfield point, the airplane seemed to be moving slowly. At a point the pilot described as "the point of no return," he began dumping the load. Despite this action, the airplane continued to move slowly.
Forced Flight and Impact
After reaching the end of the runway, the pilot forced the airplane to fly. He flew it "behind the power curve" for approximately 300 yards. During this time, the airplane never gained sufficient airspeed or lift to sustain flight. Subsequently, the airplane experienced a "torque turn," losing all altitude, and impacted trees. The accident resulted in damage to the airplane.
Mechanical Status
The pilot stated that there were no mechanical failures or malfunctions to the airplane or any of its systems prior to the accident.
