During a flight review, a CFI performed a landing with 40 degrees of flaps. The airplane bounced, struck the runway nose-down, departed the left side, and hit a drainage ditch. Both pilots confirmed engine response when power was added.

Flight Review Background

A private pilot was receiving a flight review from a certified flight instructor (CFI). During the review, the CFI asked to perform a landing and was permitted to do so.

Landing and Bounce

The CFI aligned the airplane with runway 14. The wind was from the south-southwest at 8 to 15 knots. The airplane was configured with wing flaps at 40 degrees. Over the runway, the airplane dropped onto the runway in a nose-high attitude. It then bounced back into the air and struck the runway again, this time in a nose-down pitch attitude.

Runway Excursion

Following the second impact, the airplane departed the left side of the runway and struck a drainage ditch.

Pilot Reports

The CFI reported experiencing wind shear during the landing. Both pilots agreed that the engine responded when the CFI added power. The private pilot reported that the airplane was too slow for flight, while the CFI stated that the airplane would not fly with 40 degrees of flaps.
