Incident Overview
A private pilot reported a complete loss of engine power shortly after departure. Despite efforts to restart the engine, it remained inoperative. The pilot maneuvered the aircraft toward an open field for an emergency landing. During the landing rollout, the airplane struck a ditch, causing the nose gear to collapse.
Follow-up Examination
Subsequent inspection of the fuel system identified that the fuel metering valve within the fuel pump was corroded shut. Additionally, approximately five tablespoons of water were recovered from the fuel pump. No other anomalies were noted in the fuel system.
Conditions and Actions
The pilot's immediate actions included attempting to restart the engine and selecting a suitable landing area. The landing rollout was normal until the aircraft encountered the ditch, which damaged the nose landing gear. The aircraft came to rest in the field.
Investigation Findings
Investigators focused on the fuel system due to the power loss. The corrosion of the fuel metering valve prevented proper fuel flow, and the presence of water indicated contamination. These factors were consistent with the reported engine failure.
