Flight Details
The flight departed under visual flight rules. Shortly after takeoff, the pilot obtained an instrument flight rules (IFR) clearance to the destination airport. Air traffic control (ATC) communications were transferred to several facilities as the flight progressed.
Accident Sequence
When the airplane neared the destination airport, the pilot cancelled the IFR clearance. The pilot then proceeded to fly toward his business location and was observed performing low-level maneuvers described as "buzzing." Witnesses reported that while flying at low altitude, the airplane struck the tops of trees. Subsequently, the airplane either entered a spin or spiraled before impacting the ground. A postcrash fire consumed the cockpit, cabin, and a section of the left wing.
Postcrash Examination
Examination of the wreckage revealed continuity of flight controls for roll, pitch, and yaw. The engine was examined and showed no evidence of preimpact failure or malfunction.
