Engine Power Loss Forces Landing on Snow-Covered Terrain (N3624M)

Incident Description

A certificated commercial pilot was conducting a cruise flight over tree-covered terrain when he noted a rough running engine and a slight reduction in engine rpm. Emergency procedures for engine roughness were attempted but did not remedy the condition. The engine subsequently experienced a rapid loss of power, resulting in a loss of altitude.

Forced Landing

Faced with the loss of engine power, the pilot selected a forced landing site in an area covered with snow and trees. During touchdown on the soft, snow-covered terrain, the right main landing gear collapsed. The airplane then pivoted to the left, and the left wing struck a stand of trees. The airplane sustained structural damage to the left wing and fuselage.

Postaccident Inspection

A postaccident inspection of the airplane was conducted but did not reveal a reason for the loss of engine power.
