During landing on Runway 15, the left brake pedal did not respond, causing the airplane to veer off the runway and strike a VASI assembly with its left wing. Examination revealed a hole in the brake line from chafing against a rivet on a strut fairing bracket.

Accident Sequence

The airplane touched down on Runway 15. As the pilot applied the brakes, the left brake pedal did not respond. The airplane veered off the right side of the runway, proceeded into a grass area, and the left wing struck a VASI (Visual Approach Slope Indicator) assembly before the airplane came to rest upright.

Examination

Post-accident examination of the airplane revealed a small hole in the left landing gear brake line. Further inspection of the brake line showed chafing marks created by a rivet located on a strut fairing bracket adjacent to the brake line.

Maintenance History

The airplane's most recent annual inspection, completed about 3 months prior to the accident, had noted chafing on the brake line, and the line was replaced at that time. The strut fairing was installed on the airplane about 1 month prior to the accident. At the time of the strut fairing installation, no chafing of the brake line was noted.
