Fuel Planning and Flight Preparation
The pilot departed with full fuel in both tanks, totaling 30 gallons, which she calculated would provide approximately 5 hours and 13 minutes of flight time. The purpose of the 340-nautical-mile flight was to fulfill the solo cross-country requirements for the commercial pilot certificate. The flight instructor believed that a nonstop leg of at least 250 nautical miles was necessary to meet the requirements.
In-Flight Challenges
During the flight over mountainous terrain, the pilot encountered strong and turbulent winds. While en route, she realized she had been off course for about 10 minutes and spent approximately 20–25 minutes maneuvering to correct the deviation. After regaining the correct course, about 4 hours into the flight, the cockpit fuel gauges indicated approximately 3 gallons of fuel in each tank.
Engine Power Loss and Emergency Response
As the pilot obtained visual contact with the airport, approximately 8,500 feet above ground level (AGL), the engine lost power due to fuel exhaustion in the right tank. She configured the airplane for best glide and switched to the left tank in an attempt to restore power. The engine briefly restarted and ran for about 30 seconds before power loss recurred. During the descent, she followed the emergency checklist and glided for approximately 5 to 10 minutes.
Attempted Landing and Collision
At about 1,000 feet AGL, the pilot determined that the airplane could not reach the runway due to dense trees in the glide path. She opted to land in a field. Approximately 30 feet AGL, the engine restarted, causing the airplane to climb to about 40–50 feet AGL and drift to the right. The airplane then collided with a tree and spun to the ground, landing upright.
Flight Duration and Mechanical Condition
The total time recorded on the Hobbs meter was 4.1 hours for the flight. The pilot reported no preimpact mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane. The relevant regulation, Title 14 CFR Part 61.129, requires for commercial pilot certification a cross-country flight with landings at a minimum of three points, including one segment of at least 250 nautical miles straight-line distance.
