Accident Details
According to the pilot, the airplane experienced a loss of engine power shortly after takeoff. Despite efforts to restart the engine, the pilot was unable to restore power. During the subsequent forced landing, the airplane collided with trees in an orange grove.
Examination Findings
Examination of the downed airplane revealed structural damage: the ribs of the right wing were bent, and the fuselage was buckled. Further inspection of the engine components disclosed that the lower gasket on the glass gascolator bowl was not aligned. Additionally, the glass gascolator bowl was found to be dry and cracked.
Maintenance History
The most recent maintenance performed on the airplane was an annual inspection, which was completed 20 hours before the accident flight on October 23, 2003.
