Accident Details
The aircraft sustained damage during a forced landing following a loss of engine power that occurred while climbing after takeoff. The pilot reported that the takeoff roll and initial climb were normal until reaching an altitude of approximately 350 feet above ground level, at which point the engine ceased to produce power.
Pilot Actions
Seated in the rear seat, the pilot instructed the pilot-rated passenger to switch fuel tanks, verify the magneto switch position, and engage carburetor heat. These actions did not restore engine operation, prompting the pilot to execute a forced landing in an open field. Upon touchdown, the main landing gear collapsed after contacting soft terrain.
Post-Accident Investigation
Following the accident, two gallons of fuel were drained from the system; samples showed no water or particulate contamination. The damaged propeller was replaced with a serviceable unit to facilitate an engine operational test. The engine started and idled between 550 and 600 rpm, then was accelerated to 3,350 rpm without any anomalies detected.
