Incident Overview
A pilot experienced a loss of engine performance shortly after takeoff, prompting an attempted return to the runway that ended with the airplane descending into trees. According to the investigation, the airplane had arrived at the airport approximately 20 minutes before the accident.
Flight Events
During the initial climb, the pilot observed that the airplane was not climbing as expected and the rpm gauge needle was dropping. Realizing there was no suitable area ahead to land, the pilot elected to turn back to the runway. However, during the turn, the airplane descended into trees.
Post-Accident Examination
An examination of the engine and fuel system did not reveal any abnormalities. Weather conditions recorded at the airport around the time of the accident included a temperature of 80°F and a dew point of 52°F. A review of an FAA carburetor icing probability chart placed the reported temperature and dew point in the "serious at glide power" area of the chart.
