Incident Summary
The aircraft experienced an in-flight loss of engine power while on the downwind leg of the traffic pattern, leading to a forced landing during which it struck trees and terrain. The airplane sustained substantial damage.
Pilot's Account
According to the pilot's accident report, the airplane had been out of service for three weeks for its annual inspection. During that period, the pilot discussed with the mechanic the replacement of cylinder #2 and reported oil leaks that were difficult to resolve. The aircraft was signed off and released for flight on the morning of the accident. The pilot noted that the pre-takeoff run-up was normal, with cylinder and head temperatures within limits. Takeoff and climb to pattern altitude were normal. While on the downwind leg, after reducing power near midfield, the engine initially ran fine but then began missing. The pilot checked the mixture (full rich), applied more power—which briefly responded before sputtering—and observed high cylinder temperatures. Fuel tanks were switched. The pilot alerted the tower of the engine problem and received clearance for landing on Runway 12. During the emergency procedures, the pilot turned toward the field, lowered the landing gear, and maintained best glide speed. The engine continued turning but did not produce power. Flaps were not extended. Recognizing that the runway could not be reached, the pilot notified the tower. The aircraft flew into the tops of trees north of Indiana State Road 32, then rotated to the left and came to rest near the road and a bridge.
Engine Examination
The engine was removed from the accident aircraft and shipped to the manufacturer for testing. A test run revealed that the engine produced its rated power.
Flight Manual Guidance
The airplane's flight manual stated that the most probable cause of engine failure would be loss of fuel flow or improper functioning of the ignition system.
