Flight Details
The flight was intended as a 30-minute trip between local airports. While in cruise flight, the engine lost power. The pilot had the left fuel tank selected at that time.
Pilot Actions
Upon losing power, the pilot turned on the boost pump and switched fuel tank selection to the right tank. This provided a momentary surge of power but was insufficient to sustain engine operation. The pilot then set up for a landing at the nearest airport.
Landing Attempt
Realizing that the glide ratio would not allow reaching the airport, the pilot concentrated on landing in a vineyard. The airplane impacted the crops and was stopped by the trellis wires.
Post-Accident Examination
Examination of the engine found no anomalies that would have prevented normal operation. The left fuel tank contained 1 gallon of fuel, and the right tank contained 11 gallons. When electrical power was applied, the fuel gauges displayed values consistent with the measured fuel quantities. The unusable fuel quantity per tank is 1.3 gallons.
