Incident Overview
A private certificated pilot was landing a airplane on a snow-covered gravel bar. According to the pilot, prior to landing two passes were made over the site to visually check the condition of the landing area.
Sequence of Events
During the landing roll, the main landing gear tires broke through the top layer of deep crusted snow. This caused the airplane to nose over. The aircraft sustained structural damage to the left wing and the rudder as a result of the event.
Post-Accident Observations
The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical anomalies with the airplane. The investigation did not identify any mechanical failures or malfunctions that contributed to the accident.
Damage Assessment
The accident resulted in damage to the left wing and rudder. The extent of damage was limited to those structural components.
Pilot Actions
The pilot performed two flyovers to assess the landing site before committing to the landing. Despite these precautions, the surface conditions were not sufficient to support the aircraft during the landing roll.
