Overview
An airline transport certificated pilot was operating an airplane at low altitude over houses in the vicinity of an airport. The pilot climbed to approximately 200 feet above ground level to enter the airport's landing pattern.
Sequence of Events
According to a pilot-rated passenger, the pilot was intending to overshoot the final approach course. At a very low altitude, the pilot rolled the airplane into a steep bank right turn in an attempt to intercept the final approach course. The passenger reported that the airplane then entered an accelerated maneuver stall. The pilot-rated right front seat passenger pushed the control yoke forward and attempted to level the wings. The passenger stated that this action appeared to break the stall, but the airplane was too low to recover. Subsequently, the airplane struck the ground while in a shallow banked skidding turn and cartwheeled.
Postaccident Inspection
The passenger stated that there were no mechanical problems with the airplane prior to the accident. The postaccident inspection conducted by the National Transportation Safety Board investigator-in-charge did not discover any mechanical anomalies.
