Accident

A private certificated pilot was conducting a takeoff in a ski-equipped airplane from a remote, snow-covered lake. The lake was 3,000 feet long, and the snow depth was approximately 5 feet. The temperature was about 40 degrees Fahrenheit, which the pilot described as making the snow conditions sticky. The wind was from the south at about 10 knots.

Departure

The pilot initiated the takeoff toward the south, applying full engine power. The takeoff run was initially slow until the skis dropped into previously compacted ski tracks. The airplane lifted off near the south end of the lake and climbed to about 5 feet above the snow.

Avoidance Maneuver

To avoid spruce trees at the south end of the lake, the pilot began a gentle left turn. During the turn, the left wingtip of the airplane brushed the snow.
