Incident Overview
During the landing roll of a 14 CFR Part 135 scheduled commuter flight, the airline transport certificated pilot observed a fire in the right engine compartment. He activated the firewall fuel shutoff for the right engine and brought the airplane to a stop. Passengers were evacuated, and the pilot discharged the aircraft's fire extinguisher into the right engine compartment. Airport personnel supplied additional dry chemical extinguishers, and the fire was extinguished.
Passenger Report
A passenger aboard the flight reported smelling gasoline and smoke as the airplane turned onto final approach, and she observed flames upon landing.
Damage
The airplane sustained structural damage to the right wing.
FAA Examination
An FAA inspector examined the airplane and determined that the fire pattern was consistent with an in-flight fire on the inboard side of the right engine. The fire appeared to have concentrated around the hydraulic pump, fuel pump, and turbocharger. Inspection of the fuel and hydraulic lines to these pumps revealed loose "B" nuts that showed no signs of heat discoloration. The hydraulic fluid reservoir was found to contain fluid.
Maintenance History
Approximately 31 flight hours before the fire, the airplane's right engine hydraulic pump had been replaced. According to maintenance personnel interviewed by the inspector, mechanics removed the right engine's fuel pump during the replacement to access the hydraulic pump. During reinstallation of the feeder line to the fuel pump, one mechanic held the line in place while another tightened the fitting with a wrench. A leak check performed at that time revealed that the fitting was cross-threaded and leaking. The fitting was then re-tightened and signed off.
Laboratory Testing
The inspector sent the fuel and hydraulic lines to the NTSB IIC for examination. Each line was subjected to an air pressure leak test, and no leaks were discovered.
