Overview
A pilot preparing for a short cross-country flight departed from Gainesville Airport and climbed to 3,000 feet. Upon arrival at the destination airport, the pilot entered the traffic pattern, turning downwind and then base to set up for final approach.
Engine Power Loss
As the pilot adjusted the power setting, the manifold pressure began to drop. The pilot switched the fuel selector from the right fuel tank to the left fuel tank, but the manifold pressure continued to decrease, and the engine subsequently lost power.
Forced Landing
The pilot executed an off-field forced landing on a road. During the landing rollout, the right wing struck a tree.
Aircraft Damage
Post-accident examination revealed that the outboard section of the right wing had broken off the airframe. The nose of the airplane was buckled downward and aft, and the nose gear had separated from the airframe. The left wing assembly was buckled.
Fuel Examination
Examination of the fuel tanks showed that the right fuel tank contained less than one quart of fuel, while the left fuel tank held approximately 12 gallons of fuel.
Pilot's Statement
According to the pilot, "a possible miscalculation of remaining fuel in the right tank, and more attention to fuel management may have prevented the emergency landing."
Pilot Operating Handbook Reference
Review of the pilot operating handbook showed that the Before Landing checklist item #2 states: "Fuel Selector Valve - SELECT FULLER TANK (feel for detent)."
