Incident Overview
A pilot on a traffic reporting flight experienced a loss of power while returning to the departure airport. The pilot communicated the issue and indicated an intention to land in a field. Witnesses observed the airplane parallel a road before banking to the right and striking trees in a nose-down, inverted attitude.
Examination of the Wreckage
All major components of the airplane were accounted for at the accident site. Examination revealed no evidence of preimpact damage or malfunctions of the airframe or powerplant. No fuel spillage, staining, or odor of fuel was detected.
Pilot and Personal Items
The pilot was located in the right seat of the airplane. A portable video player and study materials for a flight instructor rating were found nearby. It was also discovered that the pilot had, on multiple occasions, asked other pilots about performing maneuvers during traffic patrol flights.
Cause Determination
No probable cause was identified by the investigating authority.
