Accident Overview
A pilot was attempting a routine landing at McMinn County Airport when the accident occurred. The aircraft was approximately 15 feet above the runway when the pilot began the flare. Instead of completing a normal touchdown, the pilot nosed the plane down and forced a landing, touching down on the main gear. The pilot described the landing as 'very hard' and then taxied the aircraft to the hangar.
Sequence of Events
According to the pilot's account, the approach and flare were initiated at the standard altitude. However, from 15 feet, the pilot abruptly lowered the nose and executed a forced landing. The main gear contacted the runway first, resulting in a hard impact. After touchdown, the pilot taxied the airplane without further incident to the hangar for inspection.
Damage and Findings
A post-flight examination of the airplane revealed that all flight surfaces were intact. However, the center section of the airframe sustained damage, and several rivet heads were found detached. The pilot did not report any mechanical problems with the airplane before or during the flight. No other contributing factors were identified in the investigation.
