A student pilot lost directional control after a violent nose wheel shimmy during landing on runway 21, resulting in a runway excursion and collision with a taxiway berm.

Landing Sequence

Upon arriving at the destination airport, the student pilot established a visual approach and touched down on runway 21. Shortly after the wheels made contact with the runway, the airplane's nose wheel began to shimmy violently. This oscillation prevented the pilot from maintaining directional control.

Loss of Control and Excursion

The airplane veered to the left, exiting the runway surface onto the grass. It then collided with a berm located alongside a taxiway. The impact with the berm brought the airplane to a stop.

Examination Results

A post-accident examination of the airplane revealed that the nose gear was torn from the airframe. The propeller blades were bent aft, and the engine firewall was damaged. The student pilot did not report any mechanical problem with the airplane during the landing.
