Accident Overview
A flight instructor was providing recurrent training to a private pilot during a landing on a dry, paved asphalt runway. After an uneventful touchdown, the second pilot applied the brakes, and a loud shuddering noise was heard. As the landing roll continued, the right main landing gear collapsed, causing the right wing to strike the runway. The airplane sustained structural damage to the right wing.
Postaccident Examination
A postaccident review of the fractured right main landing gear leg assembly was conducted. In the fracture zone, brownish rust-colored deposits were observed covering approximately one-quarter of the circumference of the main landing gear tube. The remaining three-quarters of the circumference exhibited a 45-degree shear lip, with fracture surfaces consistent with an overload failure.
Conclusions
The accident resulted from a failure of the right main landing gear leg. The source does not provide a probable cause for the collapse.
