A pilot reported a sudden engine power loss during an air taxi after repositioning a helicopter. The main rotor blade struck the tailboom during the ensuing autorotation landing. Postaccident examination revealed minimal fuel in the tank despite the fuel gauge indicating sufficient fuel.

Accident Sequence

The pilot of a helicopter reported that after a previous flight earlier in the morning, he secured the engine and waited approximately one hour for it to cool down. He then started the engine to reposition the helicopter to the south side of the airport. During the air taxi, he observed the boost pump caution light illuminate, followed by the engine out light and low rpm warning lights. He performed an autorotation landing on the south taxiway. During the landing, the main rotor blade contacted the tailboom, resulting in its separation.

Pilot Report

The pilot stated that earlier that morning he had flown with an individual for about 30 minutes. After securing the engine and waiting, he started the engine to relocate the helicopter. He reported that during the preflight inspection, the fuel gauge indicated greater than 10 gallons of fuel. He maneuvered the helicopter into the wind while descending. After the accident, he secured the helicopter and asked the passenger if he was okay.

Passenger Report

According to the passenger, while flying at about 10 feet above ground level, the engine seemed to start losing power. The passenger stated that the total flight time was approximately 20 to 30 seconds and that he did not perceive any visual or audio alarms. He noted that he is not familiar with the helicopter or its systems.

Postaccident Examination

An FAA inspector-in-charge (IIC) examined the accident site and the helicopter and spoke with the pilot. The pilot reported to the IIC that the purpose of the flight was to reposition the helicopter for fuel. Postaccident examination revealed that less than one ounce of fuel was drained from the fuel tank, and approximately one liter of fuel was drained from the fuel filter canister.

Fuel Quantity Gauge Test

The fuel quantity gauge was tested and found to indicate correctly when fuel was added in five-gallon increments. A total of 15 gallons of fuel were added during the test.
