Introduction
A helicopter conducting training operations experienced an engine failure while in a left-handed traffic pattern. The flight was intended to practice maximum performance takeoffs and straight-in autorotative landings. The helicopter was on the downwind leg at an altitude of approximately 550 feet at the time of the incident.
Flight Sequence
The instructor reported that the student was flying the helicopter. During the downwind leg, the instructor reminded the student to activate the carburetor heat. As the student reached forward to comply, the engine ceased operating. The instructor stated that he did not see the student actually pull the carburetor heat control. The engine rpm dropped immediately and completely, and the instructor heard the corresponding cessation of engine operation.
Forced Landing
The instructor took control of the helicopter from the student without delay. He entered an autorotation and maneuvered the helicopter to land on a golf course. During the landing, the helicopter sustained damage.
Post-Accident Inspection
Under the supervision of an FAA inspector, the helicopter was examined. The engine was given a test run, and no preaccident anomalies were noted with the airframe, flight controls, or engine.
