Overview
A helicopter engaged in police support operations experienced an in-flight emergency and subsequently impacted terrain in a residential backyard. The aircraft was assisting ground officers in locating a burglary suspect at the time of the event.
Flight Details
Both the pilot and observer were using night vision goggles. The pilot established an orbit at approximately 400 feet above ground level. During the fifth orbit, the crew heard a very loud noise originating from inside the helicopter. The pilot reported not knowing the cause but recognized an emergency. The helicopter shook and began a right turn. The pilot immediately lowered the collective and entered autorotation. After flaring, the helicopter impacted the ground in the backyard of a residence.
Post-Accident Examination
Examination of the helicopter after the accident revealed that a .30-.06 rifle bullet, fired from a high-powered rifle, had severed the left anti-torque pedal at its connection point with the vertical control tube. The bullet then ricocheted into the pilot's leg. An inspection of the engine found no anomalies that would prevent the engine from developing power.
