Events
During the landing sequence, the pilot did not extend the landing gear. The pilot stated that he had completed the normal landing checklist, including the step to lower the landing gear. At touchdown, the wind increased and the airplane was traveling at a speed described by the pilot as "a little too fast." The airplane bounced, and the pilot elected to perform a go-around for another landing attempt.
Witnesses observed that the initial touchdown was made with the landing gear retracted. They saw the propeller strike the runway surface. The pilot then initiated a go-around, climbing to 500 feet and circling runway 24 twice before attempting a second landing.
During the second approach, the pilot reported a loss of engine power. He stated that he was unable to reach the runway. The airplane subsequently collided with trees and then the ground.
Examination
Examination of the runway found scrape marks and propeller slashes consistent with a gear-up landing. A post-accident examination of the airplane revealed no mechanical problems.
Pilot Statement
After the accident, the pilot stated that during the approach for the second landing, a loss of engine power occurred and he was unable to reach the runway.
