Accident Overview
The accident occurred when an airplane, described as light blue in color, collided with a high tension static line associated with a high voltage transmission tower. The flight was conducted at low altitude during dusk conditions. Following the impact, the airplane descended uncontrolled to the ground.
Witness Observations
A certified flight instructor who witnessed the accident reported seeing the airplane approximately 200 feet above ground level (AGL) and traveling at a high groundspeed. Prior to striking the power lines, the airplane did not appear to be increasing or decreasing in altitude. Its direction of travel was from east to west.
Radar Data
Recorded radar data was used to establish a track of the airplane. Mode C altitude reports indicated the airplane was at 200 to 300 feet AGL for an extended period. However, due to the low altitude of the flight, radar coverage was intermittent and ended 13 minutes before the aircraft reached the accident site.
Mechanical Examination
Post-accident examination of the airplane revealed no preimpact mechanical malfunctions that would have precluded normal operation.
Additional Circumstances
The airplane was flying east-to-west, toward the setting sun, at the time of the accident.
