Accident Overview
A certified flight instructor (CFI) and a student pilot were conducting takeoff training, pattern work, and approach-to-landing instruction at an airport. During a touch-and-go landing, the engine began to sputter and lose power. The aircraft was at an altitude of 300 to 400 feet above ground level and approximately two-thirds down Runway 01 when the power loss occurred.
Actions Taken
The CFI assumed control of the airplane and leveled it, hoping the engine would regain power. However, the engine subsequently stopped, forcing the CFI to execute a forced landing in a field adjacent to the airport. On landing, the aircraft collided with a ditch and nosed over.
Post-Accident Examination
The registered owner of the aircraft conducted an examination of the engine assembly after removal from the airframe. The top spark plugs were removed and found to have normal electrodes with the proper gap, as per the Rotax Maintenance Manual. The oil and fuel lines were intact and not breached. A visual fuel sample showed no contaminants, and the fuel system remained full and intact. The in-line fuel filters were free of contaminants. The carburetors were inspected and no contaminants were observed. The electrical system, including coils and lighting coils, functioned normally with no anomalies. The gearbox, checked by manual rotation of the engine, was functional. Rotary valves operated correctly, and compression appeared normal when the engine was turned by hand. The engine head was removed, revealing no damage to the pistons, sleeves, or rings.
