Incident Overview
A private pilot with 610 hours of flight time reported that during landing on runway 18L, a gust of wind pushed the airplane from behind. The runway was 8,001 feet long and 150 feet wide, constructed of asphalt. Despite applying brakes and full aileron deflection, the airplane began to drift to the left.
Sequence of Events
The airplane departed the left side of the runway, and the right wing collided with a runway distance remaining sign. Subsequently, the airplane reentered the runway and taxied to the ramp. The pilot provided a written statement describing the events.
Weather Conditions
According to the pilot, while 5 nautical miles east of the airport, the Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) reported winds from 260 degrees at 14 knots. At the time of the accident, the weather observation facility located at the airport reported winds from 290 degrees at 16 knots, gusting to 21 knots.
Pilot Qualifications
The pilot held a private pilot certificate and had accumulated approximately 610 hours of total flight experience as reported in the investigation source.
