Preflight and Fuel Estimation
Before departure, the pilot conducted a preflight inspection of the airplane in the hangar, including removing the cowling, and reported that everything appeared normal. Based on the duration of a previous flight and estimated fuel consumption, the pilot calculated that the airplane had approximately two hours of fuel remaining. The pilot then asked line personnel to tow the airplane out of the hangar, intending to refuel upon return from the flight.
Flight and Fuel Indication
After flying a practice instrument approach, the pilot switched fuel tanks and observed the fuel indicator, interpreting it as displaying 22 gallons. Relying on this reading, the pilot flew north away from the airport to set up for another instrument approach. During a subsequent instrument scan, the pilot noticed a low fuel indication and immediately turned the airplane back toward the airport, reporting to air traffic control that fuel was low.
Engine Power Loss and Forced Landing
Shortly after the low fuel report, the engine lost power. The pilot initiated a forced landing. During the landing, the airplane struck trees and sustained substantial damage. Examination of the airplane revealed that the empennage had separated from the fuselage and the fuselage was buckled.
Injuries and Post-Accident Examination
The pilot, who was the sole occupant, sustained serious injuries. According to a Federal Aviation Administration inspector, examination of the airplane's fuel tanks found no evidence of fuel.
