Incident
A private pilot on a personal cross-country flight under 14 CFR Part 91 reported experiencing intense heat from the instrument panel and floorboard during the initial climb after takeoff. The pilot also thought he smelled smoke. He declared an emergency and returned to the airport. Multiple aural warning alarms sounded, and his communications radio became inoperative. Believing the airplane was on fire, the pilot landed in the dirt between the runway and taxiway with the landing gear retracted. During the landing, the airplane collided with the ground and a runway sign, resulting in damage to the wings.
