Accident Narrative

The airplane experienced an abrupt loss of engine power approximately 3 miles from its intended destination. According to the pilot, the propeller initially stopped and then began to windmill. She checked the oil pressure and temperature gauges, both of which were within normal ranges. After applying carburetor heat with no effect, the pilot determined the aircraft was beyond gliding distance to the airport and initiated a forced landing to a soybean field below.

The landing was successful, but the airplane continued to the edge of the field, where it encountered an 8-inch rise in terrain. The impact caused the aircraft to nose over, resulting in substantial damage. The pilot sustained minor injuries in the accident.
